Laser treatments
Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism can be corrected with a laser treatment. Our ophthalmologists master different techniques and we have access to state-of-the art laser equipment for a treatment customized to your needs and desires.
There is a lot of overlap between the various laser treatments. Every treatment is fast (max. 3 minutes per eye) and painless.
Our intake examinations will tell us which technique is best suited to your eyes.
When are you eligible for a laser treatment?
- Vision specifications
Treatments are possible for nearsightedness (corrections of -1 to max. -7 dioptres), farsightedness (corrections of +1 to +4 dioptres) or astigmatism (cylinder of up to 6 dioptres).
- Age
You must be at least 18 years old and no older than 60, with a stable refraction.
- Conditions involving pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Recent intake examination
The intake examination used as the basis for your treatment may not have been carried out more than half a year ago. You have to take out your soft contact lenses for at last 14 days before the intake exam. With semi-soft contact lenses, you need to take the lenses out for at least 1 month.

Various types of laser treatments
KLEx SMILE
The Kerotorefractive Lenticule Extraction (KLEx) SMILE laser treatments are the latest treatments available, and we have been able to offer them for quite some time. With Smile, a one-step procedure is possible, which means that all treatments are carried out with a single laser device. First, a small disc in the deeper part of the cornea is lasered in 10 seconds. In the second step, this thin disc of corneal tissue is removed via a 2.5 mm opening. After that, the cornea is treated entirely painlessly with the laser.
- Least invasive laser treatment
- Minimal impact, thanks to a tiny incision of only 2.5mm
- Exceptional precision, mainly at higher strengths
- Less likelihood of dry eyes
- No flap is created.
- The technique is a bit more expensive.
Femto-LASIK
First, a Femto laser is used to remove a thin layer (the flap).
Then, an excimer laser is used to perform the correction.
After the laser treatment, the flap is put back and the little incision quickly closes up again.
- Very precise
- Very quick recovery
- Safer
- Quicker and better quality of vision
- Less likelihood of repeated treatment
- Not suited to a thin or irregular cornea
- Greater likelihood of dry eyes
- Greater likelihood of epithelial growth
PRK or ‘no touch’ PRK
With this type of laser treatment, the top cell layer of the cornea is removed manually (PRK) or with a laser (‘no touch’ PRK), before the excimer starts its work to correct the vision. After the treatment, we place a temporary contact lens on the eye so that the incision can heal.
The surface layer grows back fully in less than a week.
- Long-proven and reliable technique
- Safe technique for thin corneas
- Suitable for practitioners of contact sports with a risk of eye injuries (e.g. boxing, judo, etc.)
- Burning, stinging or weepy eyes and high sensitivity to light in the first few days after the procedure.
- Longer recovery time
- Possible slight clouding of the cornea
Presbyond
This laser treatment is suitable for people between the ages of 45 and 60 who want to see clearly without their distance glasses or reading glasses. With a Femto LASIK technique, one eye, the distance eye, is brought to 0 dioptres and the other eye, the reading eye, to -1 to -1.5 dioptres. The brain combines the two images and creates a sharp image at all distances, so after the procedure you can see distant objects and also read without glasses.
- Can be used for both farsighted and nearsighted people
- Fast recovery
- Reliable and reversible
- Both the contrast vision and stereo vision are maintained.
- A possibility of cataract forming with age
- Greater likelihood of dry eyes
- Possibility that additional treatments may be required afterwards.
- A small chance that glasses may still be needed for specific tasks.

- The laser treatment itself is very quick (around 5 minutes per eye) and painless.
- When you arrive at the laser centre LVC in Drongen, we ensure that you immediately feel comfortable.
-
- After the administrative formalities have been completed, we accompany you to the operating room.
- There, your eye is given a local anaesthetic with drops and is carefully disinfected.
- In case of a Femto-LASIK treatment, you will first feel a bit of pressure for around forty seconds when the laser creates the flap.
- The flap is then opened.
- While you look at a flickering light, the laser does its work. You will hear a little crackling sound while the laser is doing its work, which is completely normal. The actual laser procedure takes less than a minute per eye and is nearly painless.
- After the procedure, antibiotic drops are applied.
- With Smile, the laser treatment takes only 10 seconds and the removal of the lenticule around 2 minutes.
- After the laser treatment, you can have a bit of a rest, and after a check-up by our team, you can go home. For safety reasons, it is best not to drive yourself and to have someone accompany you.
- Taking the preparation, the treatment and the follow-up into account, you will spend around 45 minutes at the laser centre.
